Letter to Residents – Non-Highway Vehicles & Electric Scooters
While the Village Board likes to work with residents, non-highway vehicles have gotten to be an issue. There have been times in the past where this has needed to be addressed, but the start of this summer has proven to be very troublesome.
The Village Board is being approached daily by residents with concerns/complaints regarding non-highway vehicles (mainly golf carts and electric scooters). The purpose of this letter is to bring this issue to you (the residents) and ask for your assistance in addressing it.
While neighboring communities have ordinances with permits, restrictions and/or fees for recreational vehicles, currently the village does not have an ordinance in place in an attempt to keep our “small town.” That being said, concerns have been brought to the board that include but are not limited to:
Operators of vehicles not being of age or licensed, too many passengers on a vehicle, passengers not remaining seated while the vehicle is in operation, not stopping or rolling through stop signs, not obeying speed limits, not yielding to cars, trucks, etc., driving on the incorrect side of the road and more.
Even though the village does not have an ordinance in place, there is an Illinois statute that does address most, if not all of these issues. Please visit https://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/fulltext.asp?DocName=062500050K11-1426.1 for the complete statute. Discussions are taking place regarding enforcement and getting a handle on the situation. It is up to all of us in determining the direction the board and law enforcement needs to go moving forward.
Thanks for working with us on getting control of the situation and keeping this a great and safe community!
